The federal shutdown has created chaos and fear for the millions of individuals across Washington who rely on federal nutrition programs to feed themselves and their families. Early in the shutdown, families with young children panicked as funding for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program nearly ran dry. Days later, the same threat turned to SNAP, with the payment of benefits uncertain beyond October. As the political arguments over federal nutrition programs drag on, no one knows when or how much help will come.

While politicians argue in Washington, D.C., families in Washington state are paying the price. No one should lose access to food because of political gridlock.

Contact your members of Congress today and urge them to provide stable, sustainable funding for SNAP, WIC, school meals, and other nutrition programs for the duration of the shutdown. Food assistance should never be a bargaining chip in budget negotiations.

Dear Congress Member,

Millions of Washingtonians experience hunger every year, including more than 900,000 individuals who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to put food on the table. The past month has been extremely stressful for these families. Unclear and inconsistent guidance from the federal government has left them with major questions about the future of the food benefits they depend on to survive.

Early in the government shutdown, families with young children were panicked at the news of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program quickly running out of funds. Only days later, attention turned to SNAP, with warnings that benefits could go unfunded after October. Now, with several courts ruling that SNAP benefits must be paid, the situation is even more unclear. Will families receive their benefits? If so, when - and how much?

Food benefits must never be subject to the whims of political disagreements. These programs are essential lifelines and entangling them in federal politics has dire consequences on real American families.

I urge you to work with your colleagues in Congress and the USDA to ensure that SNAP, WIC, school meals, and all other federal nutrition programs remain fully funded for the duration of the government shutdown. The USDA must release available contingency funding immediately and draw on additional funding reserves to ensure benefits are paid in full until the government reopens.

No one should have to worry about finding their next meal. Hungry families should not be used as bargaining chips in political gridlock.
